Another twin moment

We were just playing a guessing game with letters. It was N-man's turn. He said, "I'm thinking of something that starts with the letter N."

We all made a few wrong guesses, then N-man gave a further clue: "It's something you celebrate at night."

B-man yelled out almost immediately, "Halloween!"

"Yes!" Nate said.

We did let both kids know that Halloween starts with an H. I wonder what they think Hanukkah starts with...

A still-not-well well update: We had our well repaired today, so the first step is done. A water sample has been taken, and results will be ready in 1 or 2 days, depending on how backed up the lab is. If by some miracle it's bacteria-free, we can start using the water. If, as is probably the case, it's contaminated, they'll have to put in chemicals to kill the bacteria. That takes 24 hours, plus a while to clear all the chemicals out. Either way, we're in the home stretch and should have usable water by the end of the week, or the beginning of next week at the latest.

I love clean water. I miss clean water. I think next time we chose a charity to donate to, it's going to be for a clean water fund or well fund. This has been pretty eye opening. I knew it would be inconvenient to live without running water, but I didn't know quite how inconvenient it would be.

Green tip for the day: Be thankful for your water, and think of a way you can conserve water today! I'd love to hear your water conservation tips in the comments. It can be as simple as "turn off the faucets while brushing teeth" or the like!

This may be TMI but I have 2 things that I do that conserve water and are gross by most Americans' standards.
1. I don't flush at night. It wakes me up more and there is no reason - no one is awake to be grossed out. And being preggo, I get up at least once a night!
2. I don't shower every day. Again, I know people think its gross. But some days, I just don't feel dirty. And I honestly see daily showering as a waste of water, and hot water at that. If I was running or working out everyday, I would feel differently but most days, esp. in the cooler months, I don;t break a sweat.

Will everyone still be my friend please? :)

PS - I'm now using bar shampoo from your Green Tip and I love it! I don't need conditioner anymore, either!

I kept meaning to come back here and comment again! Ironically my degree is in environmental engineering with an emphasis on water! But I only studied and worked with municipal water treatment, never home wells. Whole different ballgame on treatment options.

That is why I love tap water so much, besides the obvious hating on plastic water bottles.

I can't imagine not having running water. We have filters on our system and we never buy bottled water anymore. Like Nicole, I don't always flush at night for the same reasons and I usually take a shower every day, but they are so quick. When I was a kid I used to hate taking quick showers, I wanted to linger and enjoy the shower. Now, even though I still love to shower, I take quick showers for many reasons: to save water, to save money, and because I have 3 kids that I need to run in and out of the shower quickly. Maybe I'll try to be more like Nicole and shower every other day unless I am totally sweaty and gross! I still need to try your bar shampoo, but I am using my own homemade shampoo made from castile soap and olive oil along with some essential oils.

BTW-I love your green tips and I look forward to reading them and trying to implement them!

HAH! I do the same as Nicole (I'll still be your friend, Nicole ;) )

Unfortunately, I know I waste water in many other ways...like while rinsing dishes to go into the dish washer. (And *gasp* I can only drink water from water bottles. And Poland Spring is the only kind. I know. I'm a freak.)

Geez. Now I'm thinking I should try that shampoo bar.

Oh, and we're home all week if you need to do some laundry!!

Gotta love that think alike, even when it's wrong!

I do the same thing as Nicole, and don't flush at night (or late in the evening). It just runs forever, and the noise wakes me up! I also only shower every other day, except when I exercise or do something else where I break a sweat. I do try to take them at night, too, cuz they're shorter when I'm actually awake.

We had a nasty drought here a few years ago that was awful...we had less than 3 months of water left at a couple different points. It really makes you re-think how you use water!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't flush at night!

Nicole, what kind of shampoo bar did you get? I have another brand to try once my Burt's Bees runs out. I'd highly recommend a shampoo bar to anyone thinking of it!

Nancy, I find a splash of lemon juice in tap water makes it more palatable. Maybe that'll help you break your poland springs addiction :)

1. Your Halloween story is HILARIOUS! I love it!

2. We have a silver galvanized bucket in the kitchen sink that catches water and I use that to water plants and flush the toilet.

3. We don't shower daily unless we work out and we shower very quickly. If I'm not washing my hair, I can shower in 1 minute, 30 seconds. My husband can do it in less than 60 seconds. We time ourselves with the microwave timer because we're big dorks!

4. We don't prerinse our dishes.

5. We never wash dishes or laundry if it's not a full load and we don't wash clothes unless they are visibly dirty or smell bad.

6. We turn off the water when we brush our teeth.

It's kinda become a game to see how much money we can save on our water bill (which is insanely expensive in Portland.)

Love the Halloween story. Typical twin brains!

I do a lot of laundry and I'm a real stickler about full loads.

I do need my shower in the morning though, and thankfully I sleep through the night. I guess I save a little there.
