When I grow up...

Have I mentioned that I'm not awesome at all this preschool/parent stuff?

This Friday is "career day" at preschool. The kids are supposed to come dressed up as what they want to be when they grow up. Um, what? Besides Firefighter or Doctor, how do you even dress kids up as a job?

And, they're THREE! How do they know what they want to be?

So I asked them what they want to do when they grow up. N-man said he wants to move boxes into storage spaces. Can you tell it's not just been me whose been super focused on moving??

B-man immediately jumped on board with this idea, expanding it to "I want to move really, really, really HEAVY boxes!" I think he wants to be a weightlifter/mover.

I just asked them again, and they're still intent on "mover". I think I might get them little boxes and write "N-man and B-man Moving and Storage" on the side and let them bring those to school on Friday.

I will admit that I've been talking up doctor or firefighter, though. Yes, I'm unapologetically choosing future careers for my children based on how easy it would be for me to make a costume by Friday. They didn't bite, though. Putting out fires or curing disease just doesn't have the same draw as toting heavy boxes from here to there!

Wouldn't it be great to be a kid again for the simple matter of choosing a career? Right now I'm positive that "Municipal Waste Disposal Tech" would probably be Murphy's ideal occupation.

Cute! Too bad he didn't say he wanted to be an exotic dancer :) Hey,boys can do that too, right?
Thanks for stalking my blog

This goes to show why it is hard to explain people's jobs in "the real world". Lawyer, doctor, teacher - all one word descriptors. If I had to explain what my husband did to the kids I'd be at a loss.

For our 5th grade professions play, I told my parents I wanted to be the first female president of the US. HA! My poor mom, she came up with an oxford shirt, custom skirt with my initial on the hem, and a pair of glasses to make me look smart.

Now I think - what 11 year old girl wants to be president?

LOL! I've been having similar "what the heck??" thoughts. Who knows what they'll be come Friday. (Although, we do have firefighter AND Doctor outfits...so those popped into my head as well.)

I can totally see Maggie saying "Princess!" So don't be surprised if she's at school dressed like Belle. heh

If you ask my 3 year olds what they want to be when they grow up, they say "a grownup." I think I'd have a problem talking them into anything else.

Too cute! I distinctly remember my Mother trying to shovel costumes/ professions on me as a child. She lobbied for me to be a nurse on Halloween about 3 years running. Never happened. Even at 4 I knew I didn't have the chops!

Blue shirts, twill pants and make little name tags for the shirt pockets and voila! (Though you'll have no bragging rights, I'm afraid.)
