Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, I'm going to make my 10% promise official (or at least as official as writing it on a blog can be): I'm going to try to change 10% of what I do. Buy one thing of organic vegetables each time I go shopping. Buy less plastic (and less stuff in general). Recycle more, including bringing home plastic cups and bottles when we're out and it's more convenient to just throw them in the trash. Do the laundry in cold water, and turn off the extra rinse cycle (I've actually been doing this for a few months and my clothes seem clean. Maybe the people who know me will tell me if I seem dirtier than I used to??).

I can't change everything. It's too much. But I can change a little. And when I get used to that, I can change a little more.

So that's that.

We're off now to go buy some herbs to plant a little herb garden. And we'll be planting our sunflower seeds today...thanks to KCRSummertime for the great suggestion!

Happy Earth Day!

Random Unrelated Thought: We're back from our trip to NJ for Passover. I have TONS to blog about, although nothing too major that can't wait. But you'll probably be reading about the trip for days as I get all my thoughts down.

Hooray for Earth Day!

I haven't read it yet, but apparently this week's (4/20/08 for posterity, in case people are reading this years from now...;)) NYT Magazine is all about incremental changes you can do to make a difference. I am looking forward to reading it!

The thing that I'm trying to get myself to do is to use our reusable bags when we go to the grocery store, instead of paper or plastic. I'm INCREDIBLY bad at remembering to use them, though. The worst ever case was when I actually did remember to bring the bag into the market with me, slung on my wrist, and went through the self-checkout and self-bag, and put my groceries into two plastic bags, with my reusable bag still slung over my wrist. !!!! Talk about a mental block!

Thanks for the continuing inspiration!

For what it's worth, I have always only washed our clothes in cold with no extra rinse cycle. So if I appear to be clean enough to you, then you should be fine :). Or maybe you've been wanting to tell me something about the way I smell . . .

I would recommend Charlie's Soap (www.charliesoap.com) for an environmentally friendly cold-water wash powder; it's hypoallergenic and biodegradable. Locally, you can get it at Isis for cheaper than the online price. (I know, something at Isis is CHEAPER???)

Go green, girl!
That's great.
I don't know if you have them where you live, but we signed up for a half-share in a CSA this year and I can't wait to get our first basket! Green things! Fresh things! Stuff that I'll have no idea what to do with! (Saute with garlic! My answer to everything.)
